了： Expressing "now" with "le"

＊ 现在 (xiànzài) isn't the only way to express "now." You'll notice that in many common expressions, 了 (le) is used in place of the word for "now." Structure is "[New Situation] + 了"

 

1) 五点了。It's 5 o'clock now.

2) 我五岁了。I am 5 years old.

3) 我走了。I am leaving now. 

4) 吃饭了。Time to eat.
